Suggestion of the Day [Jun. 9th, 2006|11:37 am]
If and when any of you guys have kids it would probably be a good idea to save the blood from the baby's umbilical cord. There has to be testing of the mother before the baby is born to make sure there isn't HIV or Hepatitis so keep that in mind. And it costs about $500 to harvest the blood and $100 a year to store it cryogenically. It's not for everyone but it just ensures that, especially with the way research is going these days, if something should happen to you child in the future the cord blood could be used for all sorts of stuff. And if you marry someone who is a radically different ethnicity then you it can be harder to find bloodtype matches and for things like bonemarrow so it's really important for that. And if you don't want to save it consider donating it for other people to use or for research. If you donate it for research it means we don't have to use fetal stem cells and that makes things easier for everyone.
